People In Music History
Salieri, Antonio (1750-1825) Italian composer who lived mainly in Vienna and
died there: Beethoven and Schubert were among his pupils. He intrigued against
Mozart, but the idea (as expressed in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Mozart and
Salieri) that he poisoned Mozart is false. Wrote mainly Italian operas
(including a Falstaff, after Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor), but
also 6 masses, a Passion oratorio in Italian, 2 piano concertos, etc.
